Tianmen Mountain and the 999 steps in Zhangjiajie
Destinations/Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie

The sandstone pillars that inspired Avatar, plus a glass bridge over a 300-metre gorge.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is a forest of vertical sandstone pillars that appear and disappear in the mist. It is our home city, which means we know which gates to use, which cable cars to avoid, and when to be on the trails before the tour buses arrive.

What to see

Yuanjiajie viewpoint

The pillar that became the floating Hallelujah Mountain in Avatar.

Tianmen Mountain

A 7.5-kilometre cable car up, then 999 steps down — or the escalators, no judgement.

Grand Canyon glass bridge

430 metres long, 300 metres above the floor, and not for anyone afraid of heights.

Golden Whip Stream

A flat, shaded walk between the pillars — the best easy morning in the park.
